Lill Scored as Time Expired to Give Schroeder the Win

- In the first game of the tournament season where the lower seed was victorious, #5 Webster Schroeder defeated #4 Penfield 8-7.  The Warriors scored the game winning goal with 0:00.3 remaining on the clock.  Payton Lill scored her fourth goal as time expired to give the Warriors the win.

The game was extremely close throughout, the lead changed four times.  The Warriors started off the game strong with the first three goals.  Lill scored the opening goal with a feed from Madison Bell with 20:54 remaining in the first quarter.  Maria Hristodoulou and Lill added unassisted goals to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead with 18:29 left on the clock.  Penfield came back with the next four goals to take their first lead.

Kristen Baumer scored the first goal on a slow break up the field.  She drew the double team, and instead of passing off the ball, she drove straight to the game for the unassisted goal.  Four minutes later they scored again, this time Megan Motkowski scored on an 8 meter shot.  The first assisted goal was scored when Motkowski assisted Alanna Fallone on the inside crease.  Schroeder called a timeout to try and stop the momentum.  Penfield came out of the timeout and scored 12 seconds later.  Baumer scored fast-break goal after grabbing the draw control herself.  Overall, the Warriors won the draw control 11-5; however, there the Patriot wins often lead directly to a goal.  The final goal of the half was scored when Hristodoulou fed the ball into Kennedy Walters above the crease.  The score was tied 4-4 going into halftime.

In the second half, Schroeder took back the lead with a fast-break goal from Hristodoulou.  They held the lead for five minutes until sophomore Mia Petrone scored off a great cut to the cage.  Motkowski found her from behind the cage and Petrone finished into the back of the net to tie the game for the third time.  Five more minutes past until Motkowski drove from behind the cage to give Penfield the 6-5 lead.  Schroeder did not let the lead stand and tied the game for the fourth time 0:19 later.  Kelsey Nelson scored from across the crease off a feed from the left side by Madison Bell.  Two minutes later, Bell made the exact same play and hit Lill for the goal.  0:32 later, Penfield tied the game for the fourth and final time.  Motkowski assisted Fallone on an inside feed to a cutter with 10:31 remaining on the clock.

The final ten minutes slowed the pace way down.  Both teams were looking for the final shot and goal.  When possession changed, both sat on the ball.  With 2:03 remaining, Penfield had the ball on offense.  They held, until they lose it on a missed pass.  Schroeder cleared the ball up at 0:47.  They attempted to go to the cage, but were turned away by Penfield multiple times.  With 0:06 remaining on the clock, the Warriors called their second timeout around the restraining line.

The Warriors came out of the timeout and tried to drive to the cage, Penfield turned them back twice before Hristodoulou drove into a double with Lill cutting behind her.  When Lill came around from behind Hristodoulou she passed the ball off and Lill finished into the back of the cage with 0:00.3 remaining.  There was not enough time left on the clock for a final draw and the clock expired with the ball flying into the air off the draw.

The game was a strongly defensive contest from both sides.  Schroeder had strong defensively plays from senior Julia DeWeese, eighth grade goalie Jordan Concordia and junior Emma Dear.  Concordia finished with 8 saves (6 in the second half).   She kept her team in the game and was a major factor in the victory.  For the Patriots, sophomore attackman Lucy Rugaber was a strong presence on the ride with seniors Molly Hines and Bridgette Merriman having strong defensive games.  In the cage for Penfield, Laina Brozost finished with 6 saves.  She also had a strong game and kept the Warrior offense from pulling ahead.

Webster Schroeder will move on to play #1 Pittsford in the opening game of the double header on May 26th at Honeoye Falls Lima HS.
