Clement Scores Back to Back 8m to Secure Win for Braves

- Cayla Clement turned the game around and helped secure a 7-5 win for Canandaigua over Penfield.  Clement, a senior, finished the game with 2g-1a, but all three came at the perfect time for the Braves.  Clement assisted the goal to bring the score within one; then she scored the tying and go-ahead goals off of 8 meter shots.

Overall, the game was a story of two halves.  Penfield came out the of the gates strong and scored four unanswered goals to start the contest.  Senior attackman Hannah Spaan started the game with back to back goals.  The first off a feed from Lucy Rugaber and the second off a fast-break down the field.  Molly Hines scored the third goal with a drive straight at the goal with 13:09 remaining in the half.  The fourth Patriot goal was another fast-break, this time from Alanna Fallone.  To supplement the strong offensive scoring, goalie Laina Brozost had an impressive starting half.  She stopped the first six 8 meter shots from the Braves and finished the game with 8 saves.

Canandaigua did not score their first goal until 3:22 remaining in the opening quarter.  Peyton Smith scored the first of her 2g-1a to lead off the scoring with an inside feed from Natalie Gwynn.  Gwynn finished with three draw-controls for the Braves.  With 0:11 remaining in the first half, Canandaigua scored their second goal with Emily Reals assisting Maddie Pfeiffer in front of the cage.  Penfield held a 4-2 lead going into halftime.

The second half belonged entirely to the Braves.  They outscored Penfield 5-1.  Canandaigua scored 7 of the last 8 goals.  Penfield opened up the half with Kristen Baumer's lone goal.  She scored with a sweep across the top of the arc.  The Braves` next goal was scored off a strong defensive play from Megan Hoffman.  She intercepted a pass from Penfield and cleared the ball all the way up the field before giving it to Smith for her second goal.  The next three goals came from strong plays by Clement.  The first, her assist, came off a fast-break feed to Pfeiffer.  The tying and go-ahead goals were both 8 meter goals.

Play continued back and forth with both teams heading to the cage.  Canandaigua scored their final goal with 5:50 remaining with Smith dodging into the arc and then passing off to Emily Reals after the defense moved to cover.  The Braves held the ball for the majority of the final three minutes and the Patriots could not get another serious chance at the goal.

The Braves` Izzy Kenyon finished the game with seven saves.  Included in her tally where two late 8 meter saves that kept the Patriots from keeping the score close.  In addition to Kenyon, there were a number strong defensive performances from senior defenseman JuJu Braniecki.
