2016-06-04 - Caitlin Muir finished with 5g-3a to help lift HFL to a 12-7 win over Lake Shore (Section Six).  Muir's 8 points means she was a part of 8/12 goals for the Cougars.  The Eagles came into the contest tonight previously undefeated at 18-0.  Although the game was closest of the night, HFL scored the first four goals and the Eagles never game closer than two goals.

Kierin Ratliff scored the opening goal with 20:41 left in the half.  Muir came driving from the left flat and crossed a pass to Ratliff after the defensive slide.  Twenty seconds later Ashley Guerra scored with a drive from behind the cage.  The Cougars kept up the pressure and increased their lead to 3-0 after another minute.  Payton Reed fed the ball to her sister Bailey Reed on the crease.  The fourth goal started as an 8 meter for Brittany Chamberlain, who fed the ball to Guerra on the crease.  HFL led 4-0 with 16:42 left on the clock.

Lake Shore came scored two goals of their own to keep in the game.  Shayla Scanlan scored the first goal with a drive from the top of the arc.  She drove through at least three defenders and forced the ball into the back of the net.  Less than 20 seconds later they scored again.  Maggie Jimerson fed the ball from behind the cage to Madison Stevens. HFL scored two more before the Eagles scored their third.  Paige Smith, who had a big game at the draw with five, scored her first goal of the night off a feed from Muir.  Shortly thereafter Muir scored unassisted with a drive from behind the cage.

The Eagle's third goal was scored on an 8 meter free position shot from Tashawni Cornfield.  Cornfield was the leading scorer for Lake Shore with 3g on the night.  HFL added another set of 2 goals before halftime.  Muir scored both goal with unassisted drives to the goal.  The first began with an interception from Chamberlain on a ride before Muir got the ball and drove to the cage.  The second was a 1-1 drive from behind.  HFL led 8-3 at the half.

In the second half, the Eagles kept up with the scoring, but could not make any headway into the five goal lead from the first half.  Muir scored the opening goal after a series of quick passes for the Cougars.  The assisting pass came from Chamberlain.  Lake Shore scored next with Jimerson scoring off a feed from Ivy Santana.  Muir's fifth consecutive goal for the Cougars was another inside feed from Chamberlain.  The Eagles scored two more goals to bring the game to 10-6, the closest it was in the second half.  Cornfield scored after a drive from behind after a dead ball.  30 seconds later, during 6-on-6 play, Stevens came up with a loose ball near the crease and finished into the back of the net.  The Cougars kept up their pressure in the final 12 minutes.  Muir returned the favor and assisted Chamberlain on the inside and Smith scored her second goal with a drive down the middle of the field.

Lake Shore scored the final goal of the contest with a fast-break from Cornfield.  In the cage for the Eagles, Jenna Haring played the entire game and recorded 9 saves.  Although her save percentage was under 50%, she had a number of strong saves in the first half and was a key reason the score was close for as long as it was.  For the Cougars, Jessica Mitchell and Jessica Apthrope split halves with Mitchell recording two saves and Apthrope recording one.

HFL will continue on to the State Semi-Finals and play the winner of Cold Spring Harbor (Section 8) and Mount Sinai (Section 11) at 2:30 on Friday.  Cold Spring Harbor and Mount Sinai will play tomorrow at 5:00.
